obviously nancy pelosi has said she doesn't like the idea. as you just said we won. why do we need to trade that this time? >> i don't think there is going to be any trade. there is concern about medicare's long-term fiscal health because people are living longer. and the actuarial tables are a little bit out of whack on this so it's something i think you can evaluate if it is done in a fair way, but we already agreed to $1.2 trillion of spending cuts that are now a law in july of 2011. and there was no revenue in that deal. and i think to get distracted by the spending side we're taking the bait if we do that. >> stephanie: uh-huh. representative you are saying -- first of all is there going to be a vote on the 98% of us getting a tax cut, is there going to be a vote on that? >> sure. i think what will happen is that in some form the present tax rates will stay in effect on a long-term basis. now what procedural mechanism these guys eventually come up with i don't know but that's what the result is going to be. >> stephanie: all right. well it's all good news. thank

pelosi reacted to commons, say democrats are ready to bring a bill to the floor. -- ms. pelosi: thank you very much, mr. speaker. i'm glad that our speaker has brought the fiscal challenges to this floor. it's been long overdue. we have been calling on the speaker to bring forth middle-income tax cut now for a very long time. in fact, since last summer when it passed the united states senate. the president stands ready and poised with his pen to sign it. democrats in the house have a discharge petition to bring that bill to the floor. what stands in the way is an act on the part of the republican majority to bring a middle-income tax cut to the floor of the house. which across the country has almost universal support and which i think in this body, given the right to vote for it would have overwhelming support. up until know, everybody in the country, in pact in the world, have been talking about what's going to happen, those who pay attention to such matters, what's going to happen to the -- in the budget debate in the congress and witthe president . at last that subjec

not sure if you caught this, but house democratic leader nancy pelosi launched this effort to force a vote, force a vote on extending the middle class tax cut while letting taxes go up first of the year for the wealthiest 2% of americans. keep in mind, republicans own the house majority, so they control which bills, of course, come to vote. and they have not allowed a vote on the tax cuts. so pelosi has begun to circulate this petition and it would force a vote on the measure. they have to get the signatures just to get the vote to happen. if all house democrats sign the petition, she still needs just about two dozen republicans to come on board as well, and that could prove to be a pretty tough task. joining me now from washington, congressman steve israel, democrat of new york. congressman, nice to see you back here on the show. >> thanks, brooke. >> i understand you, yourself, have been reaching out to some of the house republicans on this. have you spoken to any of them? >> i have. and you're right, it is tough for a republican to break with his or her party and sign this petition

get boehner to cave, pass the tax hike with democratic votes provided by minority leader nancy pelosi and let the republican civil war begin. it doesn't even matter whether boehner gets deposed as speaker. either way, the republican house would be neutered, giving obama a free hand to dominate washington and fashion the entitlement state of his liking. what should republicans do? stop giving stuff away. if obama remains intransigent, let him be the one to take us over the cliff, and then let the new house, which is sworn in weeks before the president, immediately introduce and pass a full across-the-board restoration of the george w. bush tax cuts. >> so i don't think that's inconsistent with anything that i just said. i agree with him 100%. what have i been saying for a week? do not cave. compromise. do not cave. if the president doesn't want to meet us halfway on massive entitlement cuts, on reforming those systems to save medicare and medicaid, social security, cutting defense, reforming the taxes, then do not meet -- if he doesn't want to meet halfway, but i've got to tell you, i
